2 Nigerian nationals held from Pune for duping Goregaon woman of Rs 1.2 lakh

The Mumbai cyber police solved a case within 20 days of the FIR being filed, with the arrest of two Nigerian nationals from Pune for duping a Goregaon-based 22-year-old by ‘promising’ her a job in the USA.
Police found templates of fraudulent matrimonial and job profiles from the four laptops confiscated from the duo, using which they conned people online.
In July last year, the girl updated her profile on a well-known job portal. On December 1, she got an e-mail from Herald Square hotel in New York telling her that her profile had been selected for a job.

The e-mail claimed she would be contacted by the “American embassy via e-mail”. She then got a mail claiming to be from the ‘embassy’ asking her to pay a fee so that her documents could be processed for her travel to the USA.

DCP (Cyber Crime) C S Rajkumar said over the next few weeks, the fraudsters extracted Rs 1.2 lakh from her under various pretexts.

The ‘hotel’ then stopped responding. Realising she had been conned, the girl approached the BKC cyber police station and got an FIR registered on January 16. The cyber police began probing the matter and found that the e-mail had been sent from Pune.

Senior inspector Sudhir Mahadik said the team camped in Pune and zeroed in on the building where the Nigerian couple resided. On Friday, the police arrested Ouji Aurobe, 38, and Esther Olutotuvin, 36 who had rented two flats in a building located in the Pimple Gurav area.

The police found four laptops and 10 mobile phones from their apartment. The police also found a Honda Accord car.
“The duo have been here since around 2014. Based on materials we recovered from them, it seems they duped many,” an officer said.

An officer said the duo would scour job portals and matrimonial profiles and get details of specific applicants. They would then reply to the applicants based on information online and dupe them by asking them for money for various formalities.
