Reports say he gave himself up and was then taken to a nearby village where police thanked the people who had informed them of his whereabouts.
The fugitive - on the run after fleeing to Ghana on December 19 - was picked up after four Met police officers travelled to West Africa as part of a massive manhunt.
Interpol's director in Ghana told The Sun: "He has been arrested. He had a knife and a spoon on him.
"They will get him to Accra later tonight."
Simpson-Kent, 48, was picked up three days after The Sun revealed how he fled to Ghana before Christmas.
Local detectives traced him to an address in the capital and then to his former home in Cape Coast, 150 km from Accra.

Officers plan to drive him back to the capital city in cuffs tonight.
It is thought he will spend the night in the custody of Interpol before he is handed over to Scotland Yard.
He could be on a plane to the UK as early as tomorrow to face questions.
