Nemanja Matic, once
a make-weight in the deal that brought David Luiz into our lives,
returned to Chelsea two years ago to great applause and as a sign that
we were finally addressing the squad's Achilles heel.
He announced his
arrival in a titanic battle against Manchester City's Yaya Toure,
quickly becoming indispensable and absolutely irreplaceable, paired with
either a creative (Fabregas, Lampard) or a more destructive (Ramires,
David Luiz, Zouma, Mikel) partner. He was hailed from all corners as a fantastic signing, a key player, and one of the best at his position.
A year later, he's the squad's worst midfielder.
It's unclear what caused
Matic's sudden and precipitous drop of form (perhaps it can all be
traced back to the Ashley Barnes tackle?) -- just as it's unclear
exactly what has happened to most of the rest of Chelsea's title-winners
-- but he's gone from a dominant midfield general to a player bereft of
confidence, and, seemingly, most of his former abilities.
Others in
the squad seem to be finally getting back on track, but Matic has
continued to struggle even after the managerial change. Perhaps unsurprisingly, he's apparently considering his future at Stamford Bridge.
With his confidence affected, Matic is understood to be finding it difficult to get himself back to his desired level and is considering whether a change of club is what his career needs.Team-mates believe he has already decided to leave in the summer though much could yet depend on Chelsea's next managerial appointment.-source: Mail
Perhaps this Chelsea squad really is set to have a major overhaul,
as Matic is just the latest name to have been linked with a move away
from the Bridge. Either way, it's going to be an interesting summer.
