An elderly woman froze to death after she tried to help her husband in a wheelchair outside their US home, police said.
Maria Riffe, 74, died as her immobile husband lay about 18 metres
from her, both unable to help each other, said Putnam County Sheriff
Howard Sills.
Roy Riffe, 86, was in a motorised wheelchair going down the concrete path at their home in Eatonton, central Georgia, when he fell off the walkway.
Mr Sills said Maria Riffe, who relied on a walking frame, fell while trying to help her husband, leaving both helpless.
Mr Riffe is likely to have survived the night because he was wearing a jacket and fleece trousers but his wife was only wearing a dress. He is expected to make a full recovery.
The couple were found around 10.30am last Thursday, more than 12 hours after the incident is thought to have taken place.
Temperatures are thought to have plummeted to below 25 degrees that night.
