Given the season Ivanovic has endured, it’s a surprising move from the Chelsea hierarchy, and one that hasn’t been met to well by the fans.
A real fans’ favourite and cult hero for his gung-ho displays until this season, Ivanvovic has seen his stock take a nosedive this term, and has regularly been cited as one of the team’s worst performers.
Indeed, he’s been the subject of plenty of Twitter ridicule for some spectacularly bad attempts at defending, notably away to Porto in the Champions League.
Set to turn 32 next month, it appears age is catching up with Ivanovic at an alarming rate; he has a lot to prove in order to convince the fans he hasn’t gone into irreversible decline.
