President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday resumed work at the State
House in Abuja after a six-day vacation, a statement by his office said
Thursday.
In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the Nigerian Constitution, the
president has sent a formal notice of his resumption to the President of
the Senate and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, his
spokesperson, Femi Adesina, said in the statement.
Mr. Buhari’s return to work has marked the end of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s first tenure as acting president.
It is the first time since May 29, 2015, when the current
administration came to power, that President Buhari would step aside for
his deputy to take charge of the country.
The president had on February 5 broke from his official functions leaving Mr. Osinbajo to perform those roles till February 10.
Mr. Buhari spent most of his short vacation in London seeing his
doctors of many years, an arrangement that irked not a few Nigerians who
believe the President was not demonstrating confidence in local health
institutions and professionals by continuing to use foreign-based
doctors.
