A Thai woman who paid THB23 million to her
online farang boyfriend is among the victims of online scammers posing
as hot foreign men such as British Prime Minister David Cameron.
People of the UK, your prime minister is officially a heartbreaker in the land of smiles.
Pornnapat Chartphuek, administrator of a Facebook page called Thai Anti-Scam, filed a police complaint on behalf of the victims who came
forward after they were scammed out of a total of THB29 million by their
online lovers.
One woman alone gave her fake prince THB23 million.
On Thai Anti-Scam, a Facebook page created to discuss farang lover scams, Pornnapat said 15-20 victims come forward each day.
“Most of the scammers are Nigerians,”
Pornnapat told the police. “They use Facebook and chat applications to
befriend the victims. They use photos of good-looking farang or foreign
politicians, like David Cameron, the British prime minister.”
Posing as wealthy foreigners, the scammers
propose marriage to the victims and later claim to have sent them gifts.
In order for the gifts to pass the taxes that Thai Customs officials
demand, the scammers then request a large amount of money be deposited
into their bank accounts. After that is done, they disappear.
Although some cases tend not to be
investigated, additional complaints made to the Crime Suppression
Division have prompted further investigation, Khaosod English reported.
Just remember to be suspicious if David Beckham hits you up on Facebook.
And although it’s tempting to think someone believes the sun shines out of your ass, it’s not worth the cash.
