State withdraws charges against wife of 'fake' Nigerian doctor

Charges of corruption and violation of South Africa’s Immigration Act charges were on Friday withdrawn against the wife of a Nigerian man accused of using fake qualifications to get work as a doctor at a government hospital.

Prosecutor Meivel Machaba told the Polokwane magistrate’s court that the State was withdrawing charges against Amar Nwafor, but said that charges against her husband Anthony Nwafor and a third accused remained intact.

Amar was arrested along with her husband after they were allegedly linked to corruption and violation of Immigration Act last week.

The husband and wife pair were arrested along with Fareida Mall, who claims to be a lawyer. Mall allegedly facilitated a plot to release passports belonging to Nwafor, which were being held by Home Affairs.

It is alleged that Home Affairs had confiscated Nwafor’s documents after it emerged that he had failed to comply with immigration regulations during a fraud investigation.

Investigations by Home Affairs revealed that Nwafor had dozens of passports and had also failed to explain where he acquired his suspect medical qualifications.

Machaba told the court that the State was still opposing Nwafor’s bid to be released on bail.

“Before we start with this matter, the State wishes to withdraw charges against accused number three (Amar).”
