As a child of five, Clarke jnr had to “beg and steal” to feed his dad’s habit, even helping him in burglaries.
When police arrested him for murder Clarke jnr said: "He was dead in two weeks, yeah, I knew I should have left him, but obviously there must be something in me what couldn’t do that.“I did not want him to die without paying for what he has done.”
At Manchester crown court Clarke jnr, a father of three from Heywood, near Rochdale, was convicted of manslaughter following a three week trial.
He was cleared of murder after claiming he was affected by "prolonged bereavement reaction" - an "adjustment disorder" triggered by the death of his mother five years earlier.
The judge Mrs Justice Sue Carr told Clarke: “You suffered an unhappy upbringing, the circumstances of which you blamed on your father.
"He and your mother were both heroin addicts as a result your childhood lifestyle, along with that of your younger sister, was chaotic and neglected.
"Your father took you out stealing from a very young age. You were poorly fed and clothed and bullied at school.
“Your sister, to whom you were close, died of drug-related causes. You believe that she worked as a prostitute for your father.
"Your mother, to who you were very close, died of drug-related causes. You were and remain hugely affected by her death.
