The 19-year-old patient fell into a coma and began suffering violent seizures in March after suffering a sudden and severe cerebral haemorrhage.
The student was rushed to hospital in Yichang, in Hubei, China where he was declared comatose with little chance of regaining consciousness.
But mum Ling refused to give up on him and had her son treated in three different hospitals with acupuncture and in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber.
The devoted woman stayed by his bedside talking, reading and singing to him daily waiting patiently for him to wake up.
"Dear son, you promised to take care of your father and me one day, and we are still waiting for that day," she would repeatedly say to him.
Exactly 198 days later, Yu – who had undergone a total of five surgeries – opened his eyes to the sight of his mum reading him a novel.
