The Oredo LGA of Edo State has been sent into a frenzy after a tenant
allegedly set his 83-year-old landlord ablaze on Wednesday, Punch has reported.
The
incident, which is said to have followed a long-running dispute between
the two parties, occurred after the tenant, identified as Jeff
Obasohan, failed to pay his landlord, Pa Joseph Iyen.
Despite
handing the tenant two notices to vacate the premises, it is alleged
that Obasohan refused to leave the property, even going as far as
failing to pay his electricity bill.
According to Pa Iyen's wife, identified as Esther, Obasohan has threatened the couple before.
“He threatened to kill me or my husband. We took him to court. Then,
my husband fell ill. Later, they said that the case had been struck
out,” she said.
Pa Iyen has been reported to have passed away sue
to his extensive injuries, prompting his daughter, Faith Eganbor, to
call for a thorough investigation into the matter.
She said, “I
need justice. My father was a good man; he was kind to a fault. It was
not the first time the tenant was asked to leave this house.
“They gave him a notice to quit in 2014, 2015 and early this year. We came this morning to find out (that) our father was dead.”
Police
officials have since confirmed the incident, saying that the case has
been transferred to State Criminal Investigation Department for further
investigation.
