The suspect, identified only by his surname, Da, had planned to take revenge on the hospital for failing to cure his mother.
Reports
say that Da planned his attack after his mother, surnamed Huang, was
admitted to the city's Central Hospital with a cerebral infarction on
Valentine's Day this year.
Huang's
condition did not improve and the woman ran away from the hospital two
days later, only to be found in the beginning of March drowned in a
local river, her wrists slit in an apparent suicide.
Da blamed the hospital for his mother's death and demanded financial
compensation, but the hospital refused and asked the bereaved son to
take the matter to court.Stills of surveillance footage released by local police show the moment Da goes back to the Baoji Central Hospital in north-west China said at 8pm one day in order to carry out the attack.
He was riding the hospital lift when a nurse, Li Ming, entered and fell victim to his attack.
Li Ming recalled: "I was taking the lift to the third floor and I asked the man which floor he was going to. He told me he was going to the ninth.
Da had planned to set her and the hospital on fire to take his revenge. When the lift doors opened on the third floor, however, Li Ming screamed for help. She was heard by a man, Li Yuan, who was at the hospital taking care of a sick family member.
Reports said the men - Lv Pengfei, Feng Limin, and Lv Cheng - pushed Da to the ground before he could set the petrol alight..
Da was eventually arrested by police. After the incident, Baoji Central Hospital released a statement through local media thanking the heroes for preventing any harm from coming to the 1,053 patients and family members who were in the building at the time.
