Timothy Pauley has had 20 years added to his sentence after applying for parole.
He had hoped that his good behaviour behind bars might earn him an early release from prison.
But instead convicted triple murderer Timothy Pauley has been left
facing an extra 20 years in jail after his bid for early parole was
turned down and then spectacularly reversed.
Pauley was jailed for the murder of three people in 1980 with
accomplice Scott C Smith at SeaTac area tavern in Washington state.
He presented a plea for early release to the Department of
Corrections Indeterminate Sentencing Review Board in which he apologised
for what he had done.
However, he was told by members that his role was ‘egregious’ and
that his sentence didn’t meet current standards for similar crimes.
‘He had the gun and was responsible for shooting the male victims to
death despite the fact that they were already tied up in the cooler and
posed no threat to Mr Pauley or his co-defendant,’ a statement read.
Pauley has been sentenced to an additional 20 years in prison
With the additional 20 years, the 56-year-old will only be eligible for parole by 2031, at which point he will be 71 years old.
If his early release had been approved, he would be free by 2018.
His bid had been opposed by the victims’ families who attended the parole hearing in January.
‘I realise 35 years is a long time,’ Angie Dowell, the daughter of two of the victims said. ‘It wasn’t long enough.’
Timothy Pauley on June 12, 1980, robbed the Barn Door Tavern with
Scott C.Smith in an incident that saw them kill three people and leave
two for dead.
In his hearing Pauely blamed drugs, alcohol and depression for the
killings. He said he made an impulse decision to shoot two men who were
bound in a cooler, but fingered his accomplice, Scott C. Smith, for the
third murder.
