Man charged with murder after nine-year-old accidentally shot himself

A man in Detroit has been charged with murder after his nine-year-old son fatally shot himself with a shotgun.
Christopher Head, 45, was home on Monday when his son Daylen found the loaded weapon in a second-floor bedroom and accidentally unleashed a fatal shot to his head and died at the scene, police say.

Head is charged with second-degree murder, involuntary manslaughter, second-degree child abuse and weapons charges.
Wayne County prosecutor’s office released limited detail of the case.
“It is alleged that the father possessed a loaded shotgun that was not secured and accessible to the child ... the case remains under investigation,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

As the father is held awaiting a court hearing, Daylen’s school has set up a GoFundMe account to help cover funeral costs for the boy.
“Daylen Head, 3rd grade student, was a promising young man whose life has been abruptly cut short,” the crowd-funding page reads.
“Daylen was an energetic and loving son, brother and friend. He will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.”
Friends of the family have left tributes on the page, remembering the energetic nine-year-old as “a great little soul”.
