Chemical explosion wrecks havoc in Anambra State - sets 3 buildings ablaze

3 buildings were razed by fire in Nkpor Idemili North Anambra State when a chemical depot situated near Nkpor Junction caught fire. The three buildings affected were a five-storey, three-storey and another.

The fire was said to have been caused by chemicals stored in  drums in one of the three-storey buildings at No 1 Afam Uzugwu in Nkpor junction . An eyewitness, Mr. Clement Okeh said the fire started from a three-storey building and spread to other surrounding buildings before the fire service stopped it from spreading.

It is believed that properties worth N200 million naira were lost to the inferno despite the efforts of men of the fire service who were on hand to stop the fire. Some of the victims of the fire, Mr. Afamefuna Okwuora and  Mr. Peter Nzele, whose flats were completely destroyed by the fire, said they lost property worth over N3 million, calling on federal and state governments and corporate bodies as well as good spirited individuals to come to their aid.
Two of the affected buildings were Summer Hill Clinic and a residential home located near it. It was gathered that because the three buildings were clustered in one place, the inferno was able to affect them easily.
Contacted, the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Mr. Hassan Musa confirmed the inferno started from the chemical depot, however he said no life was lost but the Vice Chairman of Red Cross Society in Anambra, Prof Peter Katchy confirmed that one lady, who jumped from the three-storey building sustained injury and is currently receiving treatment.
