Super Eagles striker Chinedu Obasi will not be signing a
contract with Sunderland after failing to prove his fitness to manager
Sam Allardyce.
The 29-year-old former Schalke 04 forward has been on trial at the
club for the past week and was a free agent after the expiration of his
contract in the summer.
Obasi broke a leg earlier in the year and that has taken a toll on
the man who scored 4 goals in 35 appearances for Schalke over three
years.Manager Sam Allardyce said of Obasi before his trial:
“He [Obasi]
is a Nigerian international and we are just seeing because he’s got a
reasonably good CV, in terms of where he’s played before. “He has been fraught with a bad injury, which is why he’s not been
fixed up with a club yet, but we’d like to see him for this week and
perhaps next week.”
The manager said he was interested in someone who could immediately come into the team and make an impact.
He said: “But I need someone who has an impact now, not in three
weeks time, so it will be a difficult task I think. But he’s here and if
he can show us anything we haven’t got then there maybe something we
can do.”
Obasi has however failed to proved his fitness and would not be signing a contract with the club.
Obasi scored just four goals in 34 games in all competitions for
Schalke between 2012 – 2015. He was signed by the club after a brief
loan spell in 2012, having netted 25 goals in 91 Bundesliga appearances
for Hoffenheim.
He played for Norwegian second division side Lyn with Mikel Obi
before moving to Hoffenheim in 2007, and has 18 caps for Nigeria.
