Didier
Drogba scored his 12th goal in 12 games as Montreal Impact smashed three
past rivals Toronto in the Major League Soccer play-offs.
Once a blue always a blue. Former Chelsea Fc legend wheels away after scoring |
The
former Chelsea striker wrapped up the victory just before half time
after Montreal had sped into a two-goal lead thanks to strikes from
Patrice Bernier and Ignacio Piatti.
It
was the first time Toronto had reached the play-offs in their history,
but poor defending put pay to their chances of glory as they were dumped
out.
At one stage of the first half Drogba
looked set to be replaced after suffering a kick during an innocuous
aerial challenge with a Toronto defender.
But the
veteran striker remained and he was rewarded for his determination when
he finished the away side off with a perfectly taken third just six
minutes before the break.
Toronto
rallied in the second half as they desperately tried to make up for
their first-half horror show in order to salvage their season.
But it was too little too late for the Reds who failed to break down a stubborn Montreal defence.
Impact will now take on Columbus Crew in Sunday's semi-final clash at the Saputo Stadium.
