Young
English players are being squeezed out of the game because top clubs are
‘riddled’ with foreigners, Paul Scholes has claimed.

The
former Manchester United star singled out Arsenal and Chelsea for
criticism, claiming that the lack of homegrown talent coming through
their youth academies is damaging the England team.
‘You look at Under 16s or Under 17s and it’s absolutely riddled with foreign players,’ said Scholes.
‘What chance does that give to young English players? It gives them virtually no chance.
‘You look at
Chelsea and Arsenal’s youth teams and you do well to spot an English
player. It’s really sad. There are hardly any players to play for us.
It’s nowhere near what it should be and you can see why we struggle.’

The
problem was underlined in this week’s Capital One Cup ties with Arsenal
giving debuts to Glen Kamara, from Finland, Frenchman Ismael Bennacer,
and Krystian Bielik of Poland in their defeat at Sheffield Wednesday.
A
fourth young debutant, Alex Iwobi, has played for England at youth
level but now decided to represent Nigeria, the country of his birth.
Chelsea,
meanwhile, handed a second senior appearance to Bertrand Traore from
Burkina Faso in their penalty shootout defeat at Stoke on Tuesday.
