A South African court has granted bail to paralympian Oscar Pistorius
after he was convicted of murder for killing his girlfriend Reeva
Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013, with the judge saying the athlete did
not pose a flight risk.
The Supreme Court last Thursday upgraded
the 29-year-old athlete's sentence to murder from culpable homicide,
South Africa's equivalent of manslaughter, for which he had received a
five-year sentence.
Earlier, Pistorius's lawyer said his client would launch an appeal in South Africa's highest court over the murder conviction.
"[Pistorius's
bail] affidavit deals ... with the basis for the application for leave
to appeal to the Constitutional Court," his lawyer Barry Roux told a
bail hearing on Tuesday.
Bail Conditions
Pistorius will be under house arrest and will be electronically tagged. He also has to hand over his passport.
He will be able to leave the house between 7am and midday, but will only be able to move within a 20km (12 miles) radius.
Pistorius was in court to apply for bail after judges changed his manslaughter conviction to murder last week.
He is currently under house arrest after spending one year of his original five-year sentence in jail.
The date set for the sentencing hearing has been set for 18 April.
The minimum sentence for murder is 15 years, but the judge does have the
discretion to lower it.
