Adele’s new album is so hot that it has almost outsold the two bestselling albums of 2014 in just over a week.
The British singer sold 3.38 million copies of her critically acclaimed album “25” in the U.S. during its first week through last Friday, according to data from Nielsen Music.
Remarkably in the age of streaming services, that is the strongest sales for an album in its first week since Nielsen began tracking the point-of-sales metric in 1991, and “25” is the first album to hit 3 million copies sold. N Sync’s album “No Strings Attached” was the previous record holder, with 2.42 million copies sold in its first week in 2000.
25” has nearly topped the two best-selling albums of 2014 — Taylor Swift’s “1989” (released in late October 2014) and the “Frozen” soundtrack (released in November 2013) — in just one week.
Adele’s album accounted for 41% of all albums sold last week, and 48% of all digital album sales in the U.S, according to Nielsen.
