Jose Mourinho was dismissed following a run of abhorrent results and the
former England captain admits that several players are fortunate to
still be at the club.
Chelsea captain John Terry admits that several players are lucky to still be in a job at the club following the sacking of Jose Mourinho last week.
The Portuguese was dismissed following a dire 2-1 away loss to Leicester
City which left the reigning Premier League champions marooned in the
bottom-half of the table, just a solitary point above the relegation
zone.
Guus Hiddink has since been appointed on a temporary basis, and Terry
admits that the players must take responsibility for Mourinho's
departure, readily conceding that several are fortunate to still be at
Stamford Bridge.
"If it was the case where you could get rid of a lot of players I'm sure
clubs would do that, but unfortunately it does fall on the manager's
head, there's nothing we can do about that," Terry said.
"Obviously we are gutted the manager has gone, we as players feel responsible for that. We are not hiding away from that fact."
The Blues beat Sunderland 3-1 on Saturday in their first game following
Mourinho's departure, and Terry feels his side can mount an unlikely
charge on the top-four, despite lying 11 points adrift of fourth-placed
Tottenham.
"I think from the first-half performance, who knows?" he said.
"It is going to be difficult to win every game, we know that, but step
by step there are a lot of games over Christmas. If we can go on a good
run and climb the table over Christmas, then who knows?
"But look at the likes of Leicester. You expect them to drop off, but
they haven’t. Teams are doing well above us, so that’s even more reason
why we have to keep winning."
