Ferdinand has questioned whether the Dutchman is capable of getting the best out of his attacking players amid Javier Hernandez's exit. Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand says Louis van Gaal's biggest mistake was selling Javier Hernandez. The Mexican striker was axed from the Dutchman's plans at the start of the season after returning from a loan spell at Real Madrid, report the Manchester Evening News.
Just three appearances into the new season, Hernandez was sold to Bayer Leverkusen in a £6million deal.
The 27-year-old has scored 19 goals in 22 games since arriving in Germany while United have struggled for goals, finding the net just 22 times in 19 Premier League games so far this season.
Former United defender Ferdinand believes Van Gaal should have done more to keep Hernandez at Old Trafford. And he’s questioned whether the Dutchman is capable of getting the best out of his attacking players.
nd he does not believe Hernandez is the only one who found it difficult, with Robin van Persie, Angel Di Maria and Adnan Januzaj all failing to make the grade.
Ferdinand told the Sun: “Van Gaal seems to struggle to get the best out of forwards with his strict and rigid tactics.
“I loved Chicharito when I played with him.
“He guaranteed you goals, even when he was rotated between being a starter and a substitute. But Van Gaal didn’t seem to know how to get the best out of him or wasn’t prepared to adapt to the little man’s way of playing."
Since being given freedom to play at Leverkusen, Hernandez has been banging in the goals - netting 11 times in the Bundesliga this season.
