Mystery as massive 'ghost ship' oil tanker washes up on remote beach with nobody on board

A GIANT deserted oil tanker has washed up on a west African beach – and no one can explain how it ended up there.
Incredible images have emerged on social media of the 64-metre long vessel beached in Liberia, surrounded by mystified locals.

When they searched the ship they were shocked to discover it was carrying NO crew members. There were also reportedly no life boats on board.

The alarm was raised but police and immigration chiefs took days to respond before inspecting the boat on Thursday.

The tanker - named Tamaya 1 - was last seen back on April 21 near The Gambia on its way to the capital of Senegal, Dakar.

Only then was it finally discovered that the tanker is registered in the central American nation of Panama.

Baffled officials are now trying to work out why the tanker washed up near Robertsport with no one on board.

A port authority source said: “Our best bet is that the vessel’s owner might have gone broke and had no money to pay crew members.
“And therefore, the crew abandoned the ship.”
