A Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna yesterday, ordered the
National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to arrest a suspected drug
trafficker, Silvanus Emil, for failure to appear in court.
Justice S. M. Shuaibu, also ordered the NDLEA to arrest the surety
for the suspect, Abubakar Ibrahim of No 9 Balangu Road, Badarawa Kaduna,
for failing to produce the accused in court.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Emil, of No 95 Free
Town Street, Sabon Gari Kano, was standing trial for unlawful
trafficking in 116.2 kilogrammes of Indian hemp.
Shuaibu said, “The case was first brought before me on February 9, 2016, and the suspect was not in court.
“I adjourned the case to March 9, the suspect was still not in court,
I still adjourned the case to April 20 which is today and still the
suspect is not in court, nor his surety.”
Earlier, counsel to the accused, Mr L. R. Ogbole, told the court that
all efforts to established communication with the accused and his
surety were not successful.
“I did everything legally possible to contact or trace the accused and the surety without success,’’ Ogbole said.
Emil was arrested in 2013 for trafficking in 116.2 kilograms of Indian hemp in Zaria.
The counsel to NDLEA, Mr T.J. Atserhegh, said that the offence was punishable under Section 11(b) of the NDLEA Act 2004.
