Dutch Government to close Five prisons as falling crime rate leaves cells empty..

The Dutch government is considering closing five prions, on top of the 19 they already shut down, as the crime rate continues to fall, reported Sputnik news.
Justice Minister Ard van der Steur told parliament that by closing the prisons the country is aiming to reduce the cost of hundreds of empty prison cells.

Van der Steur said that judges were imposing shorter sentences, meaning criminals were spending less time on average in jail and more serious crimes were becoming less common reported The Telegraaf.

However the closure of another five prisons will see the loss of 1,900 jobs and 700 prison staff will have to be transferred to “mobile” positions, but just what that means is unclear reported The Telegraaf.

The crime rate in the Netherlands has decreased by an average of 0.9 per cent in recent years.

Just wondering if this will ever happen in Nigeria one day....
