The woman, named locally as Jacqueline Anne Sutton, is thought to have been found dead at Istanbul’s Atatürk Airport in the early hours of this morning.
Turkish media reported that the 50-year-old, also known as Jacky, had flown to the country from London and was due to catch a connecting flight to the Iraqi city of Erbil. The Daily Sabah reported that she was told she would have to buy a new ticket after missing the flight, to which she is said to have replied that she did not have the money. Her body was allegedly found by three Russian passengers.
Ms Sutton is thought to be a former BBC journalist, who was working in Australia at the Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies, with a focus on the role of women in media of war-torn countries.
