Knife Crime in the UK a Scourge out of Control? Part 2

People carry knives for different reasons. Knife when used lawfully can be used for cutting grasses.

It is used in the kitchen when cooking while some skilled technicians use it in their daily work activities. But when used in some unlawful activities, it can be dangerous and the outcome always prove fatal for the unfortunate ones.

Knives have been used in some unlawful behaviours by people. When used carefully it can be a tool but when used dangerously, it is a weapon of death. Yes a weapon of death. This weapon have been used in actions which fall under range of offences in the UK legal context which include robbery, islamophobic and homophobic attacks, burglary, sexual offences, domestic violence and criminal damage.

According to idontcarryknifeUK, “people unlawfully carry knives for the following reasons “to make people respect them, because they are not strong enough and need a weapon for back up, to instil fear in others, to push themselves up on the social ladder amongst gang members and peers, peer pressure, for armed robbery, because it is one of the cheapest items anyone can get hold of and for self-defence”

Impressive huh? Not at all! There is no excuse for carrying knives. It can only lead to two possible outcome. Injury or death! Many teenagers and adults who carry knives do not understand the implications. Bad arguments with another person can easily result to knife attacks when it gets out of hand. Innocent people have lost their lives to knife crime trying to break up fights between people. Notable example happened in Plymouth around 5.30am on Sunday October 4 when a man in his 30’s was stabbed 16 times trying to break up a fight. What a tragedy! People have been traumatised seeing people stabbed and butchered to death before them.

Just yesterday, 16 year Bailey Gwynne was knifed to death during lunchtime in Cults Academy School in Aberdeen. Another pupil has been detained as a result of the incident which is being treated as a murder case! How far can we go reading and hearing horrible news like this? No place is safe anymore. Like I mentioned in the Part 1 of this article “is this menace getting out of hand”?

Can you imagine the devastating effect of losing loved ones to this senseless act? Families become devastated and friends become heartbroken while the victim if lucky to be alive suffers lot of psychological trauma, pains, nightmares and even depression. To even worsen the situation, those who carry knife think there are safe places to stab people. An injury to any part of the body can easily sever an artery (even though am not a medical professional) and victim will bleed to death.

There have been cases where young people have died from wounds to the leg because an artery was severed In August 2015, in Sporhams area of Basildon, Essex, a man believed to be in his 20s, was found seriously injured near woodland. The man had sustained a stab wound to the leg and was taken to hospital where he died

The scourge of knife crime gripping Britain has reached new depths! In September 2015, Metropolitan police say knife crime up 18% in London.

If you feel like you are in danger or are worried, you can call ChildLine on 0800 1111.  If you feel that it is an emergency you can call the police on 999 and they will help you. You shouldn’t ever have to feel scared.
