Angry Mob beat robbers for attempting to rob bank customers

Four robbery suspects met their Waterloo on Tuesday at the Jibowu end of the Ikorodu Road, Lagos State, after they were apprehended by a mob while attempting to rob a bank customer of N200,000.

PUNCH Metro gathered that the robbers had first raided customers at a Skye Bank branch in the Morocco area.

Not done, they were said to have attacked a Diamond Bank customer in the Jibowu area, who was just leaving the bank premises.

It was learnt that the victim, however, surprised his assailants by raising the alarm.
A resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the robbers wanted to shoot him, but became confused after they saw a mob coming for them.

He said, “The robbers were about seven in number and there was a woman among them. They had robbed two people in Morocco and they decided to go to Jibowu.

“They saw a suspected Yahoo boy (scammer), coming from the Diamond Bank, and decided to also rob him. The guy, however, raised the alarm and people in the surrounding immediately rose up when they heard, ‘thief, thief’.

“The robbers, who had a gun, wanted to kill him, but because of the crowd, they could not because they didn’t have enough bullets in their gun. They fired two shots into the crowd, but nobody was hurt or injured. When people saw they had expended their ammunition, they chased them.”

The witness said while some of the robbers escaped on a motorcycle, four others were not so lucky, as they were apprehended by the mob.

The mob was said to have broken their legs and was about to lynch them when policemen from the Onipanu division intervened.

The suspects, who were soaked in blood, were said to have been taken to the station.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Dolapo Badmus, identified the robbers as Godwin Uzong, Ahmed Fatai, Rafiu Magaji and Bayo Kadiri.

She said, “The robbers had actually robbed a woman of N200,000 and were fleeing when the victim raised the alarm. Our police patrol team gave them a chase and arrested them. They are in our custody and we recovered a weapon from them.”
